Meet our students
St Andrews is Scotland’s most international university, with 45% of our students coming from outside the UK.
St Andrews has more than 180 student societies ranging from artistic and musical through to cultural and more, meaning our societies cater for a variety of interests. Our students have created a number of European language and culture societies which may appeal to you, whether you’re looking for a reminder of home or to learn more about a new country and culture. With more than 50 sports clubs, 100 competitive sports teams, and a thriving hall sport programme, the University also offers sport for everyone at all levels.

Entry requirements
The entry requirements for our programmes are listed on the web page for each of our wide range of courses.
For all our undergraduate courses, requirements for SQA Highers, GCE A-Levels and the International Baccalaureate are listed as standard, with subject knowledge requirements; for postgraduate programmes, we list the necessary elements of the applications.
The European and other equivalent requirements are listed on our entry requirements page by country.
All students entering the University must provide evidence that they can use English well enough to study effectively.
We accept a wide range of language tests and qualifications as proof of English language proficiency. If you were educated outside the UK or use English as an additional language, you should include information about your English language proficiency with your application.

Pre-sessional courses
In order to fully prepare yourself for academic study you can attend one of our pre-sessional courses. These combine language development with academic skills and orientation and provide an excellent introduction to university life.
It may be a condition of your offer that you are required to take a ten-week or four-week pre-sessional courses.

Support for international students
The University’s Student Services team can help you with applying for a visa, travelling to the UK, understanding the UK healthcare system, and whatever else you need as an international student.
Fees and scholarships
Tuition fees
For undergraduate programmes there are three main fee statuses which determine the tuition fee: Home (Scotland), RUK (England, Northern Ireland, Wales), and Overseas (international students).
For postgraduate programmes there are two main fee statuses which determine the tuition fee: Home (Scotland, England, Northern Ireland, and Wales) and Overseas (international students).
Scholarships
Every year there are a number of scholarships available to cover various elements of studying at St Andrews, including tuition fee support, accommodation awards.
You can apply for scholarships after submitting an application to study at the University of St Andrews and do not need to wait to receive an offer of a place before applying.
Please be aware of scholarship deadlines and apply for any scholarships that you think might apply to you.
Accommodation
There are accommodation options to suit all needs.
Undergraduate
Undergraduate students in their first year of study are guaranteed accommodation provided they apply by 30 June in their year of entry.
Students should apply for accommodation once they have accepted an offer to study at St Andrews whether the offer is conditional, unconditional, or an insurance place.
Undergraduate students typically move into private housing after their first year of study, however, they can re-apply to University accommodation during the reapplication window. University accommodation is not guaranteed after first year.
Postgraduate
You can apply for accommodation once you receive and accept an offer of a place to study at the University.
You should apply as soon as possible, regardless of whether your offer is conditional or unconditional.
Many postgraduate students also look to rent privately either in St Andrews or the surrounding areas, including Dundee, which can be reached by bus in 30 minutes.
Visas
EU, EEA, Swiss and other international students studying in the UK for more than six months will likely need to apply for a Student visa before entering the UK.
Students on a student visa can work (paid or unpaid) during their studies, typically up to 20 hours per week during term time and full hours during University vacation periods. The visa will detail the number of hours you are permitted to work, along with any restrictions.
The graduate route is a working visa route for those on a student visa who would like to stay in the UK after successfully completing their undergraduate degree, postgraduate degree or other relevant qualification from an approved UK Higher Education provider. Most successful applicants can stay in the UK for two years; PhD graduates can stay for three years.

The town of St Andrews
The town of St Andrews is a fantastic combination of an international community, history, culture and a stunning landscape. You can explore the cobbled streets, wander along sandy beaches, play golf on one of the seven available courses, enjoy eating and drinking in the many restaurants, cafés and bars, all while making connections that will last a lifetime.
St Andrews has deep roots in history and many of the buildings have stories to tell, starting with the medieval castle and cathedral ruins, evidence of the towns pivotal role in Scottish history. Your life and studies will take place in and amongst these buildings, giving you everything you need for an inspirational, fun, and memorable time.
