Get involved with University life as a commuter student

Updated on: 30 October 2023

Discover the society and sports events you can take part in if you live outside St Andrews and regularly travel to the University for your studies.

Students' Association societies

All students at the University of St Andrews are members of the Students' Association.

Students’ Association societies are groups of students with a common interest. All students, including commuter students, can join for a small fee. There is a wide range of societies for students with academic and non-academic interests.

The Students’ Association societies organise daytime, evening, and weekend activities for their members and sometimes for all students. Society events are a great way to meet new people and make friends.

Representatives of many of the societies will attend Freshers’ Fayre during Orientation Week where you can find out more about them and meet their members.

Carers, Commuters, Mature and Flexible Learners Forum

The Students’ Association Carers, Commuters, Mature and Flexible Learners Forum (CCMFL), organises activities, meet-ups and resources for commuter students, students who are parents or carers, mature students, evening degree and part-time students.

The CCMFL Officer is the Chair of the Forum and is a member of the Students’ Representative Council (external) which represents all students at St Andrews.

You can contact them at ccmfl@st-andrews.ac.uk.

Sports clubs

Commuter students can join one of the student sports clubs that make up Saints Sport at the University. All sports clubs are supported and developed by the Athletic Union.

There are a wide range of Saints Sport student sports clubs. Some clubs are led by student coaches, some by paid professionals.

Some clubs offer options for beginners. There are give-it-a-go sessions during Freshers’ Week and the beginning of semester. Most clubs organise social events and attend the monthly club night.

There is a fee for joining each club, with the option of adding a Saints Sport student membership to get access to the main gym, fitness classes, courts and pitches, and a climbing wall. You do not need to join a sports club to get Saints Sport student membership.
