St Andrews Prize for the Environment

Environmental sustainability is a key theme of the University’s revised strategy 2022-2027 and the St Andrews Prize for the Environment lies at its heart. This major international initiative stimulates and supports innovative, scalable and replicable solutions to environmental challenges – including the climate crisis – across the world.

Now in its 25th year, the Prize has attracted over 6,000 entries from individuals, multi-disciplinary teams and community groups from over 100 countries. Since its launch in 1998, it has awarded in excess of $2.5 million in prize money to more than 70 projects around the world that have, amongst other things, reduced human-animal conflict, promoted environmental justice, developed new solutions to reduce and eliminate waste and championed urban regeneration.

Applications are assessed by a panel of respected leaders from fields including conservation, economics and environmental science. Successful projects must demonstrate that their ideas are replicable or scalable and outline how they impact the communities in which they are based – both socially and economically. The winning project receives US$ 100,000; the runner up receives US$ 25,000.
