Sea Mammal Research

The Scottish Oceans Institute’s interdisciplinary research (involving academics from the Schools of Biology, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Geography & Sustainable Development and Mathematics and Statistics) is helping to develop our understanding and management of the oceans and is supporting the United Nations’ 2030 Sustainable Development Goal 14: Life Below Water.

The SOI is home to the Sea Mammal Research Unit – the largest of its type in the world. Its research has influenced government policies worldwide and has protected vulnerable species by changing the way that the shipping industry, the fishing industry and international navies operate all over the world.

Dr Lars Boehme and Guilherme Bortolotto De Oliveira from the SMRU have also been involved in the ship-based research expeditions to Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica as part of the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration. This is part of a project to measure the oceanic heat in front of the glacier and its potential to increase the glacier’s melting rate.
