Assistant Vice-Principal (International Strategy and External Relations)

Responsibilities of the Assistant Vice-Principal (International Strategy and External Relations) include:

  • Shaping and implementing the University’s international strategy
  • Operational oversight of the Directors of Admissions, Registry, the Global Office, Development, and Careers
  • Working with the Principal and Deputy Principal on effective engagement with key stakeholders.

Professor Stephen Gethins

The current Assistant Vice-Principal (International Strategy and External Relations) is Professor Stephen Gethins. He has held the position since June 2023 and previously held the post of Strategic Adviser within the University’s Senior Management Team.

Stephen Gethins

Stephen Gethins is a Professor of Practice at the School of International Relations at the University of St Andrews.

Professor Gethins currently sits on the Management Board of the Scottish Council on Global Affairs and leads on the University’s Scotland’s Future Series project.

Formerly Professor Gethins was the Member of Parliament for North East Fife and served for two terms on the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee. He also previously served as a Special Adviser to Scotland’s First Minister on International and European Affairs, Energy and Climate Change and worked in the European Union and in areas affected by conflict in Eastern Europe and the Caucasus.

Professor Gethins is a regular contributor to print and broadcast media and is the author of Nation to Nation: Scotland’s Place in the World.

Professor Gethins is a Trustee of the Edinburgh International Culture Summit, a Trustee of the John Smith Trust, and Chair of the Scouts in North East Fife.
